Social Engagement and Community Impact at the Hendersonville Woman’s Club

Founded in 1915 amidst the dynamic backdrop of the Progressive Era, the Hendersonville Woman’s Club (HWC) began as a visionary assembly by Mrs. Claudia Holt-Oates and her peers. This was a time when the nation was witnessing significant events—like the establishment of national parks and debates over women’s suffrage. Against this historical canvas, a group of determined women from Henderson County came together to tackle local challenges and enhance community life.

Our inaugural meeting on October 13, 1915, marked the beginning of a century-long journey of activism and community service. HWC’s early focus was on a wide array of issues, ranging from education and public health to supporting veterans and cultural programs. From organizing the first school milk station to supporting Hendersonville’s local community during World War I, the club’s initiatives quickly gathered momentum, growing its membership to over 200 women by the mid-1920s.

Today, the HWC continues to embody the same spirit of community service and empowerment, having sustained over a century of continuous dedication to the residents of Henderson County.
