The Hendersonville Woman’s Club has been in continuous service to the residents of Henderson County, NC since their first roll-call on October 13, 1915… Making HWC 103 years old! “It has been, and continues to be our sincerest pleasure to serve our community” …
2019 : Year of Learning
"SCAMS" Presented by Henderson County Sheriff's Department
Major Frank Stout educated us about the scams going around in our county and we thought we would share that information with the community so we could all be on the lookout.

Asheville VA Hospital - Bingo
One of our legacy programs is our veterans. For the Hendersonville Woman's Club, that has included hosting quarterly Bingo at the Asheville Veteran's Hopsital.
What a fun day we had volunteering at the VA Hospital. This time we were able to incorporate the kids into it! They had a lot of fun learning how to operate the bingo machine as well as call out the numbers.
We came supplied with a dessert and ice cream bar and money for the Vets. It was such an honor to spend time with them. Bonus was they were all cute as could be and asked us where the "men were". One vet even asked us if we wanted to dance with him....so sweet.

Donation for their "Needy Kids Program"
We had the pleasure of presenting a check to Upward Elementary School to help out with their "Needy Kids Program".
Principal Joyce and Counselor Anderson helped us understand the needs their school children have and how our donation would help out with things such as clothes, shoes, food as well as other miscellaneous things that kids in their school need.

Asheville VA Hospital
Continuing our century old tradition of nurturing Veterans...
Giving back to the community is what it's all about. The Veterans served us and it was our honor to serve them. The Hendersonville Woman's Club, Inc. held a bingo party and ice cream social for our Veterans at the VA hospital. We throw these parties for our Veterans a few times a year...

The Salvation Army of Hendersonville, NC
What a wonderful time we had volunteering at the The Salvation Army in Hendersonville, NC. It was a pleasure to meet the ladies of the Golden age who spend their early afternoons there. What a hoot they are!
We prepared fresh fruit salad both for the ladies of the Golden Age as well as for the children who attend after school programs at the Salvation Army. We learned that they have quite a few youngsters there on Thursday evenings and can have as many as 50 youngsters there when school is out during the day.
What a wonderful time we had serving others and getting to be called "youngsters" :)

YEAR OF GIVING
"Year of Giving” Funding Program in 2017
We began this program in December of 2016 and will continue throughout 2017 donating $1,000 each month to a local charity. Each member was asked to choose a charity which was most important to them – at that very moment! There was no group discussion of our local non-profits because we would not have been able to choose between them! We listed each member’s choice and our “Year of Giving” program began… (Yes, we started early and will be donating a total of $13,000 through this program.)

Back Row L-R: HWC’s Norah Schumacher, BRHS’s Executive Director Lutrelle O’Cain, HWC’s Leigh Nunzio and Denise Fidelia.
Hendersonville Woman’s Club member, Leslie Maier, chose the Blue Ridge Humane Society to be awarded the club’s donation for December. As Ms. Maier explains… “I’ve long been involved in animal welfare and humane society service. The Blue Ridge Humane Society is among the finest I’ve had the pleasure to volunteer with. The staff, Board of Directors and fellow volunteers show incredible compassion and do a wonderful job of saving animals from other shelters where their fate would not be as good as it is with BRHS. They support the community in a myriad of ways including a Community Pet Food Pantry for people in need of assistance keeping their beloved pets nutritionally fed, a no-cost neutering program, also emergency veterinary medical assistance by providing a $250 voucher for emergency treatment for those qualifying. Additionally, they have partnered with the Henderson County Animal Shelter to provide low-cost neutering for others in the Henderson County Community. They do an exceptional job of outreach including show-casing the adoptable animals in various venues throughout the year, reading programs in the community and adoption events. Their adoption rates are extraordinary (well over 1,000 animals through October) due to their continuous outreach, advertising and advocating. Because of their good work, they have garnered many active volunteers who assist (more are always welcome) in their ongoing programs and training to make the dogs, cats and occasional other critters more adoptable and in the public eye.”
Visit Blue Ridge Humane on their website at: www.blueridgehumane.org, or call them directly: (828) 685-7170.
“Blue Ridge Humane Society is a nonprofit 501©3 animal welfare organization and limited admission shelter whose mission is to reduce the overpopulation of companion animals and to improve their quality of life through adoption, collaboration, and community education.”
November: First Contact Addiction Ministries
Holding Check is HWC’s Holly Metcalf and Barbara Iles-Bothe. Second row; First Contact’s Chastity Bloomfield, Denise Metzler, Martha Huggins. Third row: First Contact’s Barbara Benfield, HWC’s Norah Schumacher, Denise Fidelia, Leigh Nunzio. Back row: HWC’s Leslie Maier and First Contact’s Craig Halford.
HWC members, Holly Metcalf and Barbara Bothe, chose “First Contact Addiction Ministries” as their “Year of Giving” recipient for November. As Ms. Metcalf explains, “First Contact was formed in 2011 by Henderson County residents who were struggling with the devastation and heartbreak resulting from substance abuse. It was through these experiences that they realized how difficult the process is to successfully pursue treatment and recovery options. As a licensed therapist who works with people who suffer from addiction, I truly appreciate the hard work that First Contact is doing to help those in need so that they no longer feel stigmatized or suffer in silence.” Ms. Bothe continued, “I have enjoyed getting to know the First Contact team and to hear specific examples of ways they have helped people connect with treatment services, provided safe havens, and treat all with kindness and understanding.”
For more information regarding First Contact Addiction Ministries, please contact their office at (828) 435-2180. You can also visit them online at: https://firstcontactwnc.org Family Support Groups are offered 2x/week, Tuesdays @ Mud Creek Baptist Church, and Thursdays @ Ebenezer Baptist Church.

HWC member Denise Fidelia chose, “Preschoolers Reaching Educational Potential (PREP) as her “Year of Giving” recipient for October. She explains, “The PREP Program helps to prevent preschoolers from falling through the cracks by providing early intervention to set children up for success as they start school - I love the concept of early intervention! Having worked with many children over the years, including children on the spectrum, I truly appreciate the PREP program.” Ms. Fidelia continued, “I was fortunate to observe the PREP screening process recently, and cannot over compliment their process and their staff members. The caring for each child was clearly unconditional love, amid a professional screening process! It was a very heartwarming experience for me. The work of the PREP Program will ensure each child reaches their full potential, thus allowing them to create a wonderful future… And, consequently, the PREP program will help all of us, since these children will one day play an integral part in our society and our future.”
“PREP is one of ten (10) programs offered through the Children and Family Resource Center of Henderson County,” says Linda Carter, Director of Programs at the Center. “Our mission is to improve children’s lives through parent education, quality child care resources and leadership on children’s issues throughout the community. The PREP program fulfills this vision by ensuring a healthy start in every child’s life and helping them reach their full potential so they will be healthy, safe and ready for school!” Ms. Carter concludes, “to that end, we felt very grateful to have been selected as one of the Hendersonville Woman’s Club “Year of Giving” recipients for their recognition and financial support to our PREP Program.”

“Donating to The Hendersonville Chorale was on our agenda from the very beginning,” said HWC president Norah Schumacher. “HWC members were very much aware that our Giving program should create a balanced cross-section, and the inclusion of a community-based musical program was needed as “the arts” help to reveal and enhance the underlying identity, value, and character of a community. The Hendersonville Chorale was brought into focus by a close family friend who reminded me this nonprofit (501c3) Chorale is a no-audition volunteer group of local people who love to sing, plus each member appreciates the opportunity created for them to have a part in bringing quality musical programs to the people in their community. Having attended several seasonal concerts in the past, I remembered how enjoyable they were with a wide range of beautiful and amazingly complex pieces. Their performances would rival those of paid professional chorale groups! The HWC is proud to support The Hendersonville Chorale.”

L-R: HWC’s Sarah Clayton, Norah Schumacher, Toni Warren, HIPP Sarah Alholm and Hendersonville Elementary School Principle Kerry Stewart.
Toni Warren, Secretary of the Hendersonville Woman’s Club, chose the Hendersonville Elementary PTO and the Hendersonville Inclusive Playground Project (HIPP) as the Club’s June “Year of Giving” recipient… “Ever since Sarah Alholm (co-chair of the project) spoke to the club last year I’ve been thinking about this project” Warren says of her decision to support the cause. “Elementary school is such an important age of development for children and those who typically couldn’t play with their peers because of a wheelchair, or any number of obstacles, missed out on important lessons, including about their place in society. However, an inclusive playground like this removes them from the sidelines and brings them right into the game. Contributing to the monumental efforts this PTO and the community have put into fundraising for this project seems like one way to reach a lot of deserving children. I was excited to be able to help in any way possible.”

May 2nd Presentation Photo Above: L-R; HWC’s Sarah Clayton, Barbara Iles-Bothe, BRHF Fonder/Dir. Jeff Miller, HWC’s Leigh Nunzio, Norah Schumacher and BRHF’s Mary-Beth Burns.
Mission Statement: “To transport America’s Veterans to Washington, DC to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends.”
“Veterans of the United States of America” … There are so many ways to headline that, but ultimately, they are “Our Veterans!” We belong to them and they belong to us! Our Veterans have protected their people for centuries, and for this same duration of time their people have sought ways to not let their sacrifices be diminished because they are many and great!
It is with this thought in mind and the thrill that her father, William (Bill) A. Iles, felt during his experience back in 2008 which inspired his daughter – Barbara Iles Bothe, to choose Blue Ridge Honor Flight during May as part of the Hendersonville Woman’s Club ‘Year of Giving’ program.
Barbara said, “Dad was overwhelmed and truly honored that his sacrifice and service in WWII were being recognized after all these years.” Bill passed five months after his Honor Flight to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. “There is something almost magical that happens with each of the Honor Flights” Barbara continued, “and it is for us as a people as much as for our veterans. We have an opportunity to finally and tangibly say “Thank you, the parade has not passed you by.”
Blue Ridge Honor Flight continually advocates for veterans while working with other states in developing their own Honor Flight programs in conjunction with the Honor Flight Network. There is much each of us can do to assist our local program – it’s about heart, soul and gratitude.

This organization is dedicated to rescuing homeless, abandoned, and often neglected animals from area shelters and helping them find their “forever” homes through local adoptions or through transportation to one of the many rescue groups the organization works with in Northern states. In 2012 Charlie’s Angels expanded its scope of services and opened its own shelter in Henderson County, NC.
On April 3rd HWC’s Treasurer, Nan Patton was joined by club members and CAAR staff as she presented a $1,000 check to this amazing animal rescue. Located in Fletcher (NC) this non-profit seriously rivals the successful yearly adoption numbers of larger staffed & greater funded area rescues! “Without doubt there are many excellent reasons to support animal welfare and one group that is always at the top of my list is CAAR because of their impressive forever home adoption rate, which rivals many of the larger and better-funded shelters in our area,” said Patton. “Imagine you’re involved with a real-time animal death-row drama and it’s breaking your heart and just in the nick of time a small, yet powerful, force for good flies to the rescue and a happy-ending is assured! Fact is, this drama plays out every day for CAAR volunteers, and every day their heroic efforts create the difference between life or death. Now, how could this be anything but great!”

January 20th presentation at MANNA’s Headquarters in Asheville, NC.
Sharyn Frank (HWC’s membership chair) was joined by other club members on January 20th for her presentation to the “Packs for Kids” program sponsored by MANNA FoodBank in Asheville, NC.
“For me, the “Packs for Kids” program came to mind immediately because child hunger is very serious on so many levels. My daughter’s family is in the process of adopting two children who have become “A” students through a loving environment and good nutrition! Certainly, nurturing is a major factor in a child’s development, but a child’s ability to learn is directly related to their daily nutrition. Unfortunately, even a loving environment is adversely affected by a family’s inability to provide proper nutrition for their children. This is where the “Packs for Kids” program automatically steps-in and sends nutritious foods home to the family.” Sharyn Frank, Membership Chair – HWC

“PHYSICAL THERAPY DEPARTMENT”… HENDERSON COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM
Read “Year of Giving” kick-off story in the Times News at Blueridgenow.com here…
“Woman’s Club Aims to Give Back Each Month…”
L – R: HWC’s Janet Bradford, physical therapist Cheryl Denton and assistant Leslie Hall pose with the donated motorized scooter at Apple Valley Middle School.
The scooter was donated to be used districtwide within the Henderson County School’s system. Plus, the remaining cash allotment was donated to be used by the district’s physical therapy department.
HWC’s educational committee member Janet Bradford is a long time volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Hendersonville. One day late in October Janet notice this motorized scooter (in excellent condition) for sale and immediately thought of all the children who might need this as a training tool in our local school system. Janet taught handicapped children in Georgia before retiring with her husband to Hendersonville, so she knew all the useful possibilities this motorized scooter presented. When HWC members were asked to write the name of their favorite charity, “at that very moment”, Janet’s was the first paper back and since she just couldn’t wait for the new year to begin, we started a month early in December of 2016. Thank you Janet!
